CMS Releases Latest Enrollment Figures for Medicare, Medicaid, and Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP)

Today, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) released the latest enrollment figures for Medicare, Medicaid, and the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP). These programs serve as key connectors to care for more millions of Americans.

Medicare

As of June 2024, 67,510,424 people are enrolled in Medicare. This is an increase of 95,742 since the last report. 

33,433,996 are enrolled in Original Medicare. 

34,076,428 are enrolled in Medicare Advantage or other health plans. This includes enrollment in Medicare Advantage plans with and without prescription drug coverage. 

54,292,660 are enrolled in Medicare Part D. This includes enrollment in stand-alone prescription drug plans as well as Medicare Advantage plans that offer prescription drug coverage. 

Over 8 million individuals are full-benefit dually eligible for Medicare and Medicaid, so are counted in the enrollment figures for both programs.

The data now include counts of Part D enrollees receiving the low-income subsidy and enrollee counts by coverage type, demographic characteristics, and dual eligibility.

Medicaid and Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP)

As of June 2024, 79,963,470 of people are enrolled in Medicaid and CHIP. This is a decrease of 851,310 since the last report.

            72,870,530 are enrolled in Medicaid.

            7,092,940 are enrolled in CHIP.

In addition, CMS released its quarterly Medicaid and CHIP Modified Adjusted Gross Income (MAGI) application processing time report that shows the average number of days elapsed between the date the state received an initial application and the date a final eligibility determination was conducted. The data released reflects activities for April – June 2024. Please review the report to learn more about how states performed.
