Marcos gets positive rating in first year


A number of local business groups have rated President Marcos' first year in office as mostly positive, expressing varying degrees of optimism going forward even as several economic issues remain unsettled. The Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI), the biggest business organization in the country, on Thursday highlighted the President's actions in promoting the country overseas as an ideal investment destination.

NCR workers get P40 wage hike


The National Capital Region (NCR) wage board raised the daily minimum wage from P570 to P610 for private sector nonagriculture workers and from P533 to P573 for workers in agriculture, service and retail establishments with 15 employees or less, and those in manufacturing with less than 10 workers. The National Wages and Productivity Commission has approved the wage order, which takes effect July 16.

Biz groups weigh in on junk food taxes


The Joint Foreign Chambers of the Philippines called on the government to reconsider imposing additional taxes on junk food and sugar-sweetened beverages, citing their impact on small enterprises selling these products and on households. The government proposes a tax of P10 per 100 grams or milliliters of prepackaged food products and an increased tax of P12 per liter of sweetened beverages.

Continuing rights violations


There's no arguing that these killings are just the latest in a series of violent incidents precipitated by Red-tagging. The state-sanctioned witch hunt, which violates people's freedom of association, has resulted in the warrantless arrest, detention, harassment, ambush, and killing of people on mere suspicion of supporting dissidents. Could this be the new approach to the insurgency problem that the President was referring to?
