Breaking News: 🚨 Trump wins North Carolina

Politico
Breaking News Alert

Donald Trump wins North Carolina

Donald Trump has won North Carolina, dashing Democrats' dreams of flipping the only battleground the former president won in 2020.

Trump built an insurmountable lead with voters from less populated counties while Harris failed to make it up with Black and college-educated white voters in suburban counties.

The former president's victory marks the third time he's won the Southern swing state, which has 16 electoral votes, even as Republicans struggled with their scandal-plagued candidate for governor, Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson.

North Carolina, which hadn't turned blue since 2008, escaped Democrats again in 2024, even though Harris and Trump were locked in a margin-of-error battle in public polling.

Harris, who is the first Black and South Asian woman to top a major party ticket, failed to animate Black voters at the same level as Barack Obama did in his first election. She also struggled to energize suburban, college-educated voters at the margin necessary to win the state.

Her loss in the state may force Democrats' to consider whether North Carolina should still be considered a battleground state, or if it will stubbornly remain out of reach.

How to console the grief-stricken

When it comes to condoling with someone who is grieving, one need only use any of these three sentences as listed on emilypost.com: "I am sorry for your loss," "I am so sorry," or "I am here for you."  They're not that difficult to remember, but why do so many of us always seem to say the wrong thing?

My parents never taught me how to walk through floods. I would just sit on our old house's declining wooden stairs, specifically on the third step, and watch how my late father would submerge half of his body in this cold, brown water.

For a blind runner, the New York marathon is about 'vibrations'

Being part of a crowd of 50,000-plus runners when visually impaired or blind sounds like a challenge, especially in New York, where many participants have limited or no understanding of English. Breaking News: 🚨 Angela Alsobrooks wins Maryland Senate race

Politico
Breaking News Alert

Democrat Angela Alsobrooks defeats Larry Hogan in Maryland Senate race

Democrat Angela Alsobrooks has won the Maryland Senate race, according to The Associated Press, fending off former two-term GOP Gov. Larry Hogan.

The win comes as a relief for Democrats, who had not budgeted to defend Maryland this cycle. It's generally considered a safe blue seat, particularly in a presidential year. But Hogan is highly popular among Maryland voters — and his entrance ramped up focus on the race.

Alsobrooks leaned in on Senate math as a crux of her argument, asking voters to consider the likelihood of a Senate Republican majority if Hogan was elected. She frequently highlighted things like committee chairships or floor control as part of her case, though Hogan countered by vowing to be a "swing vote" in the upper chamber.

Alsobrooks is currently a county executive in Maryland. She will be the first Black senator from Maryland and among a handful of Black women ever elected to the Senate. She has called Vice President Kamala Harris a mentor, meaning the two women could be closely allied if in office at the same time.

Alsobrooks will succeed retiring Democratic Sen. Ben Cardin, who opted for retirement after this term.

Breaking News: 🚨 FL abortion ballot measure

Politico
Breaking News Alert

Florida abortion-rights measure fails

Florida voters have rejected a ballot initiative that sought to expand abortion rights and eliminate the state's ban on after six weeks of pregnancy, The Associated Press projected. The defeat hands a significant win to Gov. Ron DeSantis and state Republican leaders who vowed to defeat it.

The voters rejected Amendment 4, which sought to roll back most of the state's restrictions to the days before the Supreme Court struck down Roe v. Wade. The results mean the state's ban on abortion after six weeks of pregnancy, which DeSantis sought ahead of his failed run for president, will remain in place.

DeSantis vowed to defeat Amendment 4 alongside dozens of other anti-abortion Republicans who believed the measure was dangerous for women and children. DeSantis and other Republicans used state resources to defeat the amendment, including creating public service announcements that the campaign behind the measure said were false.
