It's looking grim up north

Storm Warning Signals 1 and 2 are raised over the country's northernmost islands and towns, which are likely to witness a fiercer iteration of Severe Tropical Storm Siony this weekend. The warning may reach up to Signal No. 3 in areas within the cyclone's track, reports PAGASA. Over the rest of Luzon will likely be dark skies and rains.

Our live coverage with a real-time satellite rendering of Siony is more useful if bookmarked.

2

It's looking grim overall

Four of five Filipinos surveyed found their lives worse this time around compared to last year. The sentiment was echoed by the employed and the jobless alike, not to mention those among the millions who went hungry.

Pricier food and costlier tuition fees were an added slap that pushed inflation to a three-month high.

One thing we can expect to become cheaper are COVID-19 tests after President Duterte's order to put a price ceiling on. Hopefully, they will no longer cost as much as P12,000.

3

A bright pro-spect

Emerging international tennis star Alex Eala is setting her sights on her first pro quarterfinals berth. The 15-year-old leftie is overpowering older rivals at the W15 Castellon in Spain.

We're keeping her on our radar.

MOVING ON

Plan B

It's the time of year for a sticker-collecting tribe to down more than the usual doses of caffeinated drinks or their tamer fruit counterparts. The reward? Planners that are a marvel of printing, discount coupons good for a whole year enclosed.

After months in quarantine though, it seems that last year's sticker hunters are reconsidering the seasonal acquisition.

NOT LETTING GO

Katipunan's quiet battle

A top university was briefly in the news last year after stories and allegations of harassment and abuse broke out on social media. Responding to the ensuing protests, Ateneo officials swore to investigate the cases against faculty members and enact reforms.

Is there progress one year on? Franco Luna checks in with victims who recount the ordeals of speaking out and seeking justice.

Drugs, deaths and a discrepancy

Claiming lives alongside COVID-19, illnesses and violent crime is the drug war. As of end-October, 7,987 people were shot dead in thousands of anti-narcotics operations since July 2016, the police force said.

Christian Deiparine's report finds the police count inconsistent with the presidential communications' "Real Numbers PH" campaign which gives a much lower death toll.

THE UPFRONT

Dear BoF Community,

This week, countries across Europe returned to lockdown and the US recorded a record number of new coronavirus cases in a single day. With no end in sight to the global health crisis, e-commerce has become an essential lifeline for most brands. But low-cost retailer Primark has no plans to sell online at all. Will its big bet on old-school sales channels pay off? Tamison O'Connor explores why Primark thinks people will still venture out to its stores, even in a pandemic. Plus Casey Hall investigates the 'fashion billionaires' who have made a fortune in China in the year of the pandemic, and Tim Blanks reviews Undercover's 'Fallen Man' show. And Chantal Fernandez breaks down the $1.1 billion joint venture between Farfetch, Alibaba and Richemont.

Elsewhere, tune in to BoF's latest podcast to hear what the outcome of the US election could mean for the fashion industry.

[Daily article] November 6: 1981 UEFA Cup Final

The 1981 UEFA Cup Final was an association football match played over
two legs between AZ '67 of the Netherlands and Ipswich Town of England.
It was the final of the 1980–81 season of European cup competition,
the UEFA Cup. Both Ipswich and AZ '67 were appearing in their first
European cup final. Watched by a crowd of 27,532 on 6 May at Ipswich's
home ground, Portman Road (pictured), Ipswich won the first leg 3–0;
John Wark, Frans Thijssen and Paul Mariner scored. In the second leg at
the Olympic Stadium in Amsterdam on 20 May, a crowd of 28,500 watched
Ipswich take an early lead courtesy of a Thijssen goal. AZ '67 quickly
equalised through Kurt Welzl before taking the lead after a goal from
Johnny Metgod. Wark scored again for Ipswich to equalise the leg, but
AZ '67 struck back through Pier Tol and Jos Jonker. Ipswich won the
final 5–4 on aggregate to win their first and, as of 2020, only
European trophy.

Wikiquote quote of the day:

The presidency itself is not a partisan institution. It's the
one office in this nation that represents everyone and it demands a duty
of care for all Americans. That is precisely what I will do. I will work
as hard for those who didn't vote for me as I will for those who did
vote for me. Now, every vote must be counted. No one's going to take
our democracy away from us, not now, not ever. America's come too far.
America's fought too many battles. America's endured too much to
ever let that happen. We the people will not be silenced. We the people
will not be bullied. We the people will not surrender. My friends, I'm
confident we'll emerge victorious. But this will not be my victory
alone or our victory alone. It'll be a victory for the American
people, for our democracy, for America.
