🥊 Trump trouble: Two polls in two days show 2024 support for the former president has "cratered" among Republican primary voters, as USA Today put it — with Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis gaining. Go deeper.

1 big thing: Sandy Hook, 10 years on

Today marks 10 years since 20 first-graders and six educators were killed in a mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut.

  • Some of the loved ones of people killed on Dec. 14, 2012, have grown hopeful about the future, Axios' Noah Bressner reports.

Mark Barden and Nicole Hockley — both parents of children who were killed — have pushed for change.

  • Barden, who lost his 7-year-old son, Daniel, calls it a "preventable shooting epidemic."

Barden and Hockley — who lost her 6-year-old son, Dylan — helped start Sandy Hook Promise, a nonprofit that teaches students and teachers about warning signs that someone might attempt to harm others.

  • The nonprofit says its programs have led to "2,900+ mental health interventions saving at least 378 students from suicide."

🖼️ The big picture: Peter Ambler — executive director of Giffords, the gun-violence prevention group he co-founded with former Rep. Gabby Giffords, who survived a gunman's attack in 2011 — is on Capitol Hill today to talk to lawmakers about the movement's "next decade."

  • "The Sandy Hook shooting was a tragedy of historic proportions," Ambler told Mike Allen at breakfast this morning. "It also catalyzed the ... gun-safety movement."

⚫️ Giffords — part of an umbrella group that includes 80 people, with a budget this year of about $30 million — works closely with Everytown for Gun Safety, co-founded by Mike Bloomberg.

The first-graders killed would have been 16 and 17 this year.
