North Carolina state Attorney General Josh Stein has won the race for governor, defeating the state's embattled lieutenant governor and keeping the governor's mansion in Democratic control. Stein was already leading Mark Robinson when news broke in September of lewd posts he allegedly made more than a dozen years ago on pornagraphic online forums, including that he was a "black Nazi" and enjoyed watching transgender pornography, among other comments. Robinson, who developed his brand as a conservative Christian who is opposed to LGBTQ+ rights, denied making the claims. The race was seen as Republicans' best shot at picking up a governor's seat this cycle, and both sides spent tens of millions of dollars on the matchup. In the final six weeks of the campaign, however, Robinson was not only lacking financial support from groups like the Republican Governors Association — which had already spent heavily on the race — but had few allies standing with him in the Republican Party.
