1 big thing: 🚙 Car thieves don't want EVs

Car thieves aren't very interested in stealing electric vehicles, Axios' Nathan Bomey reports.

  • More than 1 million vehicles were stolen in the U.S. in 2023.
  • Four of the six least-stolen models were EVs, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

🔌 Between the lines: Experts aren't sure why this is the case, but they have a few theories — mainly that EVs are confusing.

  • The tech in EVs is still unfamiliar for a lot of people, and thieves won't have the apps or keycards that some models require.
  • And because the cars need to charge, they're more likely to be kept in a garage or close to a house, making them less attractive targets.

Flooding has already begun in some parts of Florida as Hurricane Helene — now a Category 3 storm — heads toward land.

  • Roughly 100,000 people in southern Florida have already lost power, per The Washington Post, and water levels on the state's Gulf Coast are 2–3 feet higher than normal.
  • President Biden approved disaster declarations for Georgia and North Carolina, which are expected to see flooding, high winds and widespread power outages as the massive storm moves inland.
  • ⛈️ The storm is expected to make landfall near Florida's Big Bend region this evening.

The latest.

A message from the American Clean Power Association

Permitting reform will unlock clean energy

Adding more clean power to the grid means less carbon and greater energy security.

But our permitting process is inefficient, ineffective and costly.

The Energy Permitting Reform Act will unleash clean American power, create jobs and increase grid reliability.

Congress needs to act now.

The Oakland Athletics will say goodbye to Oakland this afternoon, after more than 50 years.

  • The A's are moving to Las Vegas within the next few years. They'll play at a minor league stadium in Sacramento until then.
  • Fans were lining up outside Oakland Coliseum as early as 7am today ahead of the A's final home game. Extra security is on hand just in case.

A message from the American Clean Power Association

Building more transmission will unleash clean power

The key to a net-zero economy and spurring economic growth is accelerating the deployment of clean power.

It is time to pass the bipartisan Energy Permitting Reform Act to modernize our energy systems and strengthen our national security.

Let's do something.
