As you've likely heard by now, health insurer UnitedHealthcare's CEO Brian Thompson was fatally shot on Wednesday. He ran the insurance arm of multinational firm UnitedHealth (UNH). It appears to have been a targeted and planned attack. And the video footage of it is shocking. As you would expect, the mainstream media is milking it for everything they can. The tragic shooting has also kicked off an intense discussion around America's health insurance industry. But we're not here to discuss the politics and opinions of it all. That's beyond the scope of the Chaikin PowerFeed. Today, we're simply going to take a moment look at UnitedHealth's chart... how the Power Gauge sees the stock... and the current state of the health care providers and services industry group from our system's perspective. With so many strange events happening across the economy (the longest bear market for bonds since the Civil War... unprecedented bank closures... and soaring prices), it's no wonder the richest investors are loading up on gold. Starting off, UnitedHealth's stock has struggled compared with the broad market this year. As you all know, the S&P 500 Index is soaring. It's up about 27% so far in 2024. On the other hand, UnitedHealth's stock has only climbed around 10% this year. It simply isn't keeping pace with the market. Today, UnitedHealth earns a "bearish" rating from the Power Gauge. And we can see the stock's struggles easily on the chart. Take a look... As you can see, UnitedHealth has been in "neutral" territory for most of the year. And the stock spent most of the first half of 2024 trading below its long-term trend line. That's the dashed line on the chart. In mid-July, UnitedHealth moved into "bullish" territory for a longer stretch of time. But by mid-October, its momentum flattened out again. Looking at the middle panel below the chart, we can clearly see what happened. The stock had terrible relative strength versus the S&P 500 this year... until mid-July. Then it started to outperform. But in October, the relative strength sputtered out. The company's Chaikin Money Flow indicator weakened starting in October as well. That's the first time it turned deeply red since earlier this year. That tells us that "smart money" buying patterns from Wall Street have weakened on the stock. Or more simply, it looks like institutional traders have been avoiding the stock in recent weeks. That's not surprising... UnitedHealth is part of the health care providers and services industry group. Today, that industry group earns a "weak" rating from the Power Gauge. And it's heavy with "neutral" and "bearish" stocks... Only 16 stocks in the group are rated "bullish" or better. Fifty-five are in "neutral" territory. And 30 get "bearish" or worse grades. Meanwhile, the Health Care Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLV) also earns a "very bearish" rating in the Power Gauge right now. So, you'll be hearing a lot about health care in the coming days. I'm certain the media will continue to get everything out of this story that it can. But with the Power Gauge, we're looking at the raw, unemotional data. And the recent tragic event aside, our system doesn't like what it sees with UnitedHealth's stock and stocks overall in the health care industry right now. Put simply, I'll be looking elsewhere for opportunities.
