One of the most recent instances of dramatic falls at national parks this summer included a youngster who moved out of the way so people could take photos and then plummeted approximately 100 feet into the Grand Canyon. Wyatt Kauffman, 13, suffered nine broken vertebrae, a ruptured spleen, a punctured lung, a concussion, a broken hand, and a dislocated finger after surviving a fall from 70 to 100 feet below the park's Bright Angel Point Trail. The Grand Canyon's search and rescue team responded to a report last week that a visitor had fallen over the edge on the North Rim, according to a statement from the National Park Service. Officials who arrived at the location determined that a helicopter rescue was "not feasible." The team used rope to raise the boy to the rim. It took nearly 40 emergency personnel and around two hours to retrieve Wyatt and fly him to a Las Vegas hospital for treatment. He was discharged over the weekend. (read more) |

Index funds are sometimes considered dull substitutes for individual stocks, but investors should be careful not to confuse dull investments with subpar ones. For patient investors, a diversified index fund that follows the correct benchmark can simultaneously remove concentration risk and generate sizable value. To expand on that notion, these ETFs have a track record of making money, and with the S&P 500 poised to enter a new bull market, now is an especially advantageous time to purchase both index funds. An employee for a driving school in Colorado didn't set the best example for clients last week. The employee somehow managed to plow through the front of the business in a Hyundai Tucson. Authorities say the driver was attempting to park in front of the business when the unfortunate accident happened. Photos show the Tucson crashed through the windows of the business, just to the left of the main entrance. The crash was undoubtedly a "do as I say, not as I do" moment for the employee. Only one minor injury was reported in the crash, making it a little easier to look at the irony involved in the situation. To make things a bit funnier, the driver plowed right under a "learn to drive" sign. Here's what else we know about the situation, and the funny way people have reacted online. (read more) |
