Finding the Signal: Harnessing Artificial Intelligence and Advanced Analytics at the Intersection of Climate and Global Health

Curious about how climate and health intersect, and how AI might be able to help us understand that relationship? So were we! CII partnered with teams across USAID, and with BCG and other external partners to create Finding the Signal: Harnessing Artificial Intelligence and Advanced Analytics (AI/AA) at the Intersection of Climate and Global Health. AI/AA can improve our ability to describe complex, evolving relationships between climate and health factors; predict scenarios over vastly different time horizons; and recommend interventions with trade-offs to optimize resulting health outcomes. For example, the USAID-supported Epidemic Prognosis Incorporating Disease and Environmental Monitoring for Integrated Assessment (EPIDEMIA) system uses climate variables and disease surveillance data to support malaria forecasting in epidemic-prone regions of Ethiopia.

Despite the promise of AI/AA, however, its usage in this space is nascent-- particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). As global attention turns to climate factors with the upcoming COP27 Climate Change conference, CII is pleased to release this report and looks forward to working with partners on the recommended action pathways that encourage investing in enablers for data, capabilities, and ecosystem conditions as well as acting on specific climate-sensitive health risks.

CII's Amy Lin Speaks at Yale Institute for Global Health

As part of the Yale Institute for Global Health's Sustainable Health Initiative Innovation Exchange series, CII Acting Director Amy Lin presented CII's innovative, cross-cutting global health work to Yale students, faculty, and community members. The conversation focused on CII's guiding conceptual framework (incubate, practice, scale as noted in CII's Impact Brief), with examples of CII work across those stages, such as incubating a human-centered design (HCD) approach to HIV prevention, putting it into practice in Zimbabwe, and supporting scale with HCD lessons learned. The talk also centered on the importance of collaboration and partnership across USAID and with external partners, the importance of localization, and the value of interdisciplinary approaches.

CII's Amarnyth Sichel Delivers Keynote at RECAINSA's Digital Health Forum

On October 11th, CII's Digital Health Advisor Amarynth Sichel delivered the keynote address for the Central American Health Informatics Network's (RECAINSA's) Digital Health Forum 2022. The keynote focused on the critical digital health investment priorities outlined in USAID's Digital Health Vision, including supporting countries' digital health capacity, advancing national digital health strategies, strengthening national digital health architectures, and leveraging global goods. Amarynth highlighted the value of these priorities in action through several case studies illustrating what it actually means to harmonize USAID's investments with countries' own digital health goals. The session was streamed live to viewers around the world, and the recorded presentation can be viewed here.
