THE UPFRONT

Dear BoF Community,

You've likely noticed a growing number of clothes, bags and shoes proudly labeled as being made with "ocean plastic." But what does that actually mean? The term conjures up images of fishing nets and six pack rings scooped up and turned into sneakers before they can ensnare sea turtles and dolphins. The reality is much more complicated than that; some even think fashion's love of marine litter is doing more harm than good. Jasmin Malik Chua takes a deep dive to the bottom of the ocean plastic trend. Plus, as chair at a fashion school, op-ed writer Ben Barry says he learned firsthand how fashion education undermines Black students and what to do about it.
