Sara's snub of Congress hearing draws more scrutiny of her budget


With VP Sara Duterte's absence in the House budget hearing, lawmakers said they will be forced to either cut or transfer funds she requested for her office, while senators recounted her alleged misuse of nearly two-thirds of the DepEd's allocation in 2023.


After seven years of self-imposed exile, former Iloilo City Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog, who fled the Philippines in 2017 after being linked by then President Rodrigo Duterte to the illegal drug trade, returned to the country on Tuesday, vowing to prove his innocence.


She may have dodged further Congress questioning, but Cassandra Ong is facing more heat, accused by 10 Chinese nationals of trafficking and forcing them to work at the illegal POGO hub in Porac, Pampanga, raided in June.


The Philippines remains the "most dangerous country" in Asia for environmental activists, with the highest number of advocates killed in the region between 2012 to 2023, 17 of them in 2023 alone, according to the international watchdog Global Witness.


The latest bloodshed in the Israel-Hamas war saw Israeli missiles setting ablaze a tent camp for displaced Palestinians in southern Gaza, killing around 40 people and wounding at least 60 others, the Hamas-controlled civil emergency service said.
