Current Funding Opportunities

09/18/2024

This notice of funding opportunity (NOFO) aims to encourage research grant applications for initial translational efforts that will enable a drug discovery program for novel, non-opioid, and non-addictive treatments for pain. The program provides funding to develop and validate assays to support a distinct testing funnel and conduct screening efforts to identify and characterize potential therapeutic agents including small molecules, biologics, and natural products. Preliminary in vivo pharmacokinetic, pharmacodynamic, and efficacy studies may also be supported. The goal of this NOFO is to advance projects to the point where they meet the entry criteria for the Pain Therapeutics Development Program or other later-stage translational programs.
This NOFO is part of the NIH Helping to End Addiction Long Term (HEAL) initiative to accelerate the discovery and preclinical development of safe and effective therapeutics to treat pain with little or no addiction liability.

The Medical Student Research Training (MSRT) program provides mentored support for medical students interested in taking a year off from their medical school studies to work in an academic research lab. Support will be provided through an administrative supplement to an active NIDDK institutional training grant (T32 or TL1) in the an area of research within the NIDDK mission. A list of currently funded T32 program locations with the Principal Investigator contact information is available on the NIDDK website. Providing the opportunity for students to interrupt their medical school studies for up to 12 months to pursue a research project should help them solidify their decisions to pursue a research career, focus their research interests, and provide a background for future training and career development programs once they have completed their medical training.

This Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) invites applications that are focused on developing, using, and/or improving cellular models that recapitulate critical aspects of normal human physiology, such as micro physiological systems, organoids, and other three-dimensional models, to explore the interaction of HIV with tissues and processes within NIDDK's mission areas. Projects are expected to investigate mechanisms of viral persistence, latency, reactivation, eradication, or pathological processes contributing to co-occurring conditions.
