Pagasa: El Niño effects may last till early 2024


The weather bureau says up to 36 provinces, including Metro Manila, may bear the brunt of dry spells lasting till first quarter of next year. The World Health Organization also warns of the spread of viral diseases linked to the phenomenon.

Pogos not welcome in Valenzuela City


After Pasig, Valenzuela City is also saying no to Pogos, or Philippine offshore gaming operators. Mayor Wes Gatchalian on Tuesday said the city council had passed ordinances prohibiting various forms of online gambling, including Pogos, whose economic benefits are increasingly being overshadowed by their association with human trafficking and other crimes mostly involving Chinese nationals.

Davao City sets jeepney phaseout


"Green commuting'' may finally catch on in Davao City with the phaseout of regular jeepneys and their replacement with public buses starting next year. According to the Asian Development Bank, which is funding the city's transport modernization program for $1 billion, the current mass transport system for Davao's 1.8 million people generates carbon dioxide emissions equivalent to 232,000 tons per year.

Much ado about tourism slogan


Surely, the poor do not deserve someone who attracts controversy for all the wrong reasons as their champion. With so many problems to hurdle, the Marcos administration should not take the unnecessary burden of justifying Gadon's government post. The public perception of personal loyalty being valued over public service and competence detracts as well from the political capital and credibility of this year-old government.
