Market Review:

Reading the CPI and PPI

There are two versions of both the CPI and the PPI. We have the standard version, which is simply CPI or PPI, and then we have the Core CPI and the Core PPI. The Core version excludes the volatile Food and Energy market. The reason that Food and Energy are excluded is they are considered staples. Meaning volatile price changes in these sectors need to be consumed. We can not stop eating. Therefore, regardless of price, the demand is relatively constant. In the Core CPI number, we see a greater reaction to higher prices. The consumer can move away from certain goods and services. Demand is as much a part of any inflationary measure as is supply. For that reason, the Core number gives us a cleaner read of price stability. It is often thought this is to give us a friendlier number than the Standard read. But with energy prices dropping the standard number is showing a reduction in inflation. The Core number has been showing a persistent measure of inflation.
