  • DarkSide issued a statement Monday denying the attack was politically motivated. "Our goal is to make money," the group said. "And not creating problems for society. From today we introduce moderation and check each company that our partners want to encrypt to avoid social consequences in the future." [CNBC / Eamon Javers]
  • Homeland Security Adviser Elizabeth Sherwood-Randall said Monday the attack ought to serve as a wake-up call for private sector companies to shore up their cybersecurity capabilities. • Independence lost 55 percent to 45 percent in the last Scottish referendum back in 2014. But that vote took place when the UK was still in the European Union. Now, many Scots set to vote "leave" will do so with an eye toward rejoining the EU. [Bloomberg / Katharine Gemmell and Kitty Donaldson]
  • But while then-Prime Minister David Cameron acquiesced to a referendum back in 2011, current PM Boris Johnson is thus far holding firmly against it. Johnson has said that a referendum held now would be "irresponsible and reckless." [Washington Post / Claire Parker]
  • Sturgeon isn't buying that argument. While conceding that fighting the pandemic is her government's top priority, she said any British politician blocking a referendum vote is "picking a fight with the democratic wishes of the Scottish people." [CNN / Schams Elwazer and Duarte Mendonca]
