BREAKING NEWS: House votes to legalize weed

The House passed a bill Friday that would remove federal penalties on marijuana, the first time either chamber of Congress has voted to loosen restrictions on marijuana since a ban was imposed in 1970. The bill passed by a vote of 228 to 164. At least five Republicans voted for the bill and six Democrats voted against it.

The bill, the MORE Act, also would erase some federal marijuana criminal records, create grant programs for people or communities affected by the federal crackdown on illicit drug use and regulate and tax cannabis production, among other things.

The bill is not expected to pass the Senate but is intended to send a message to the next Congress and to President-elect Joe Biden that the issue is a Democratic priority.
