The first 2020 results are rolling in

Here we go: The first presidential results are in and candidates are sweeping up electoral votes.

Kentucky, Vermont, Virginia and West Virginia were the first to be called, giving Former Vice President Joe Biden 16 electoral votes and President Donald Trump 13. Control of the Senate is too close to call, with Republicans currently holding a three-seat majority. And Democrats are in a good position to retain control of the House — we expect Democrats to gain three seats.

We'll send you the most important developments, reactions and race calls throughout the night. Expect more email updates around 9:10 p.m., around 11:10 p.m. and tomorrow morning.

Here's what's still on the table

Polls closed in the battleground states of North Carolina and Ohio at 7:30 p.m. EST — though results in North Carolina will be delayed for 45 minutes after a handful of precincts opened late.

And we'll get our first window into the battle for the Senate with polls closed in Georgia and South Carolina. Georgia is home to two tight races, though one — a special election for the seat currently held by appointed GOP Sen. Kelly Loeffler — is almost certainly going to be decided in a Jan. 5 runoff. In South Carolina, GOP Sen. Lindsey Graham faces a stiff challenge from Democrat Jaime Harrison.

The busiest hour is 8 p.m. EST, when polls will close in 16 states and the District of Columbia, including two major Electoral College prizes: Florida and Pennsylvania. We'll also see parts of Michigan and Texas close. A call could be made tonight in Florida, but it's unlikely that we'll know which way Pennsylvania voted by the end of Tuesday.
