| | | | By Theodoric Meyer | Presented by Facebook | With Daniel Lippman HOW K STREET IS PREPARING CLIENTS FOR THE ELECTION: As Washington and the rest of the country prepares for the polls to start closing in a few hours, lobbyists have been briefing their clients on what to expect if Joe Biden prevails, if President Donald Trump defies the polls and wins reelection — or if it's not clear who won for days or weeks after Election Day. The thrust of the advice: Remain calm. "I'm advising as much patience as humanly possible," said Ivan Zapien, a Democrat who heads up Hogan Lovells' government relations practice. Holland & Knight has been advising clients on how to respond to potential unrest in the election's aftermath, said Rich Gold, who leads the firm's public policy and regulation group. — A Biden victory would mean companies, trade groups and their lobbyists will move rapidly to build or shore up relationships with Biden's transition team and the people who are likely to occupy top posts in a Biden administration. But don't be surprised if staffers charged with vetting potential appointees and managing the transfer of power are unwilling to prioritize a deluge of phone calls and emails from downtown, Zapien warned. "The risk that you're just going to annoy people is pretty high," he said. — A Trump loss would also mean a rush of administration officials looking for jobs on K Street and beyond. "I'm not a believer in, 'No one will hire Trump people,'" said Ivan Adler , a headhunter who specializes in placing people on K Street. But some administration officials are likely to have more luck than others if Trump loses. Mid-level appointees with expertise in in-demand policy areas — technology, health care, trade — will fare better than those with higher profiles, Adler said. If Trump wins, meanwhile, their stock could rise even higher. | | A message from Facebook: A vote counted is a voice heard Check your registration status, explore voting options in your state and get access to the latest, official information from election authorities in our Voting Information Center on Facebook and Instagram. CHAMBER WILL PUSH FOR RELIEF BILL IN LAME DUCK IF BIDEN WINS: Suzanne Clark, the president of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, urged President Donald Trump and Congress to resume their stalled, tortuous negotiations on a coronavirus relief package immediately whether or not Trump wins reelection. "If Vice President Biden wins—and especially if there's a blue wave—the inclination will be to wait until next year to try for a bigger package," she said in a statement . "But how many businesses will suffer or fail in the meantime? The Chamber will put maximum pressure on our leaders to pass an aid package as quickly as possible, while continuing to provide support to the businesses and workers who will struggle through the difficult months ahead." — The Chamber's next priority? Passing an infrastructure package, which lawmakers and the administration have talked about since Trump took office but which has never come close to fruition. "We lobbied hard for this in 2009 and 2017, and we'll double-down on our advocacy next year," Clark said. "Why? Investing in rebuilding our infrastructure is one of the fastest and most direct ways to spur growth and create jobs now, while strengthening and sustaining our modern economy for the long-term. Importantly, there is widespread bipartisan agreement that it needs to be done." LGBTQ GROUPS SUE OVER EXECUTIVE ORDER: "LGBT advocacy groups have filed a lawsuit seeking to invalidate President Donald Trump's September executive order banning the government from working with contractors that conduct 'any form of race or sex stereotyping,' including diversity training," POLITICO's Rebecca Rainey reports. "The groups receive federal grants and contracts to provide multiple services and health care to LGBT individuals. Their lawsuit, filed Monday in a California federal court, contends that the order limits them from using 'scientific and medical-based information regarding systemic race or sex disparities in the provision of medical treatment' when training their staff." — The suit comes after more than 150 trade groups sent Trump a letter last month urging to rescind the order. They included the American Beverage Association, the American Chemistry Council, the American Council of Life Insurers, the Edison Electric Institute, the National Association of Manufacturers, the National Association of Realtors, the Associated General Contractors of America, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and the Wine & Spirits Wholesalers of America. | | | | | | None | | EXCLUSIVE: "THE CIRCUS" & POLITICO TEAM UP TO PULL BACK THE CURTAIN ON THE MOST UNPRECEDENTED PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION IN HISTORY: It's been the most unconventional and contentious election season of our lifetime.
