1 big thing: America on edge | Monday, November 02, 2020
| | | Presented By Facebook | | Axios PM | By Mike Allen ·Nov 02, 2020 | Good evening: Today's PM — edited by Justin Green — is 475 words, a 2-minute read. | | | 1 big thing: America on edge | | | Boarded up windows in D.C. Photo: Liu Jie/Xinhua via Getty Images | | Americans hoarded groceries as if preparing for a storm, as the final hours of this election brought court fights, boarded-up downtowns and frazzled voters. - If you're feeling like this has been an exhausting four years and we have another marathon on top of that this week, you're right, Axios executive editor Sara Kehaulani Goo tells me.
Why it matters: Americans are anxious over questions they've long taken for granted, the AP notes. - Are the pollsters right?
- Will ballots arrive on time?
- Will the courts deliver surprises that toss out votes?
- Will both parties work for a peaceful transition of power?
In Harris County, Texas, a federal judge rejected a Republican request to invalidate 127,000 ballots that had already been cast via drive-through voting stations. - In Nevada, a judge rejected a lawsuit from President Trump's re-election campaign that sought to temporarily halt the processing of mail-in ballots in Clark County, which includes Las Vegas.
The big picture: Biden supporters were more likely than Trump voters to be nervous — 72% to 61%, according to an AP-NORC poll last month, the AP notes. - But Trump's supporters, too, said they feel a sense of dread.
The bottom line: America's cities are bracing for unrest as soon as tomorrow. - Texas and Massachusetts have their National Guard standing by.
- Big retailers from D.C. to New York to Los Angeles have boarded up their shops, fearing another round of looting like the wave that accompanied this summer's protests.
- D.C. is preparing for civil unrest no matter who wins, its police chief told lawmakers last month.

- Saturday: Former One Direction member Niall Horan will livestream a concert from an empty Royal Albert Hall in London that will raise money for his touring crew, who are unable to work because of the coronavirus pandemic, as well as the #WeNeedCrew relief fund.
- Sunday: Showtime's "Moonbase 8" stars Fred Armisen, John C. Reilly and Tim Heidecker as astronauts trying to qualify for a moon mission. Their training at a desert base is anything but smooth, and hilarity hopefully ensues.
- Next week: With most tourism on hold, consider a virtual outing with "The South Westerlies," which offers the impossibly beautiful coast of southwestern Ireland as the setting for a dramedy about heartache and environment protection.
