Hi there. Duterte drug war enforcer Espenido turns against Bato, Go

Police Col. Jovie Espenido, the former "poster boy" of the Duterte drug war, said on Wednesday that Senators Bong Go and Bato dela Rosa had ordered police officers to use "all means necessary" to eradicate drug suspects — and that included killing them.

"Bad precedent." That's how a number of disappointed lawmakers described the conduct of VP Sara Duterte during the House deliberations on her office's 2025 budget, noting Duterte's disdainful, combative behavior throughout the five-hour hearing.

Not so fast: The International Criminal Court would still have to secure authority from a Philippine court before it could order the arrest of personalities involved in Duterte's brutal war on drugs, according to Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla.

With the looming termination of all POGO operations by Dec. 31, 2024, the Immigration bureau has given over 100,000 foreign personnel of such companies only until Oct. 15 to voluntarily "downgrade" their work visas to avoid deportation.

In Opinion, lawyer-columnist Joel Ruiz Butuyan is urging former senator Leila de Lima to run for the Senate next year. "It will be a strategic mistake if De Lima does not seize the moment" and remind the nation of the "untold suffering" she endured under the Dutertes, he writes.

Adobo all-stars: From National Artist to beauty queen

Collecting cookbooks has been a longtime pursuit of mine. Since rekindling my love affair with our own native cuisine, Philippine-themed cookbooks capture my attention—specifically, the ones that take a deep dive into our unique cooking techniques and traditional dishes, and that contain recipes that have tales to tell and make our food culture so uniquely ours, and are thus so special.
