Jenin

The Story

Tensions in the West Bank are high.

What's the latest?

Yesterday, Israel ended its two-day military operation in Jenin — a city in the West Bank that's home to at least 14,000 Palestinian refugees. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said it launched the operation to crack down on militants in the region and to confiscate their weapons. The Israeli military sent in nearly 1,000 soldiers and used drone strikes to storm the city. The violence killed at least 12 Palestinians and one Israeli soldier and forced thousands of Palestinians to flee their homes. The IDF has since pulled out of Jenin, but many are worried the violence could spiral.

What do you mean?

Israel has promised to continue to crack down on the region, which the IDF blames for at least 50 shooting attacks this year. Palestinians say the attack in Jenin is an excuse to expand Israeli settlements. Militant groups in the West Bank are claiming "victory" and have said they'll seek revenge. Meanwhile, the US says that what happened in Jenin highlights the need for Israeli and Palestinian forces "to work together to improve the security situation in the West Bank."

Israel's raid in Jenin is considered to be one of the largest assaults in the West Bank in nearly 20 years. Now, many are wondering if tensions could spread to other cities in the region and what kind of retaliation may follow.

And Also...This

Where cocaine bear might've visited…

The White House. Yesterday, officials confirmed the white substance found in the West Wing over the weekend was, in fact, cocaine. The Secret Service is investigating who brought the baggie. People familiar with the investigation said the area receives a lot of foot traffic, so it could be difficult to trace the substance back to its owner. President Biden was away at Camp David when officials discovered the white powder.

What's breaking records…

Earth. Last month was the hottest on record since at least 1940. The temp broke the previous record set in 2019. It comes as July 3 and 4 each set a single-day record for the hottest day yet. So if you felt a little extra sweaty at the grill, you weren't alone. Experts are pointing their thermometers at El NiƱo, a weather phenomenon in the Pacific Ocean that can be worsened by climate change. Scientists say the world's weather pattern is also expected to continue to raise temps for the rest of the summer.

What's weaving out a space for itself...

Threads. Yesterday, the new social media app became available for download — a day earlier than expected. The Twitter look-alike, created by Meta, is linked to Instagram and lets people post, like, or repost messages. It's already stitching up quite the following: Meta says more than 10 million users downloaded the app in the first seven hours. The launch comes as Twitter is seeing people leave the nest.

What's keeping an eye on AI…

NYC. Yesterday, a new law took effect requiring companies to prove their AI hiring software doesn't discriminate against sex or race. Companies will now have to go through a third party that audits their AI tech, after past instances of AI discrimination.

Who people are talking about...

A missing Texas teen, who was found after eight years.

Who's keeping it real…

Kyle Richards and Mauricio Umansky.

Marketing Mix-up

Spoiler alert: Not all skincare is created equal. If you see "derm-tested" on the label, it means a skin specialist has tested the product or reviewed related trials. While "derm-recommended" requires zero testing. In fact, a skin expert can be paid just to give their endorsement for marketing purposes.

Sound sneaky? That's because it can be. So remember: Derm-recommended miiiight not be the science-backed seal of approval you thought it was. Oh, and for other ways to stay vigilant against misleading (and downright manipulative) info, you'll wanna check out this video. Trust.
