Walsh served as mayor of Boston from 2014 to 2021 after having previously served as head of the city's Building and Construction Trades Council from 2011 to 2013. Walsh's departure date and next destination were not specified in the statement, but it has been widely reported that he will head the NHL Players' Association. There was no replacement for Walsh announced by Biden. After the departures of Chief of Staff Ron Klain and Director of the Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) Eric Lander in 2022 and 2019, respectively, Walsh becomes Biden's third cabinet departure.
