🐐1 GOAT thing: Brady retires (again)

Exactly a year to the day from his last retirement announcement, Tom Brady said today he's leaving the NFL "for good."

  • Unlike last year when he ended up returning to play after an excellent season and finishing second for MVP this season was more of a slog.
  • His Tampa Bay Buccaneers made the playoffs with an 8-9 record, getting blown out in the first round by the Cowboys to finish a season where he looked, more often than not, like the 45-year-old that he is, Axios Sports co- author Jeff Tracy writes.

Brady is still considered to be the greatest quarterback of all time.

  • As charted above, his 35 postseason wins are by far the most of any player. In fact, he's won more playoff games than all but five teams — one of which is the New England Patriots. None of those teams is more than two wins ahead of him.
  • He's the NFL's all-time leader in passing touchdowns (649), yards (89,214) and completions (7,753).
  • Brady's notched seven Super Bowl Championships — six with the Patriots — and was named the NFL's MVP three times.

What's next: Brady has already signed a 10-year, $375 million deal to join Fox Sports as an NFL analyst whenever his playing career ends.

2. Remembering Tyre

Mourners gathered in Memphis today to celebrate the life of Tyre Nichols.

  • "We mourn with you, and the people of our country mourn with you," Vice President Kamala Harris said to Nichols' mother and stepfather as she spoke at the service. "This violent act was not in pursuit of public safety."

"It was not in the interest of keeping the public safe," Harris said. "Because one must ask: Was not it in the interest of keeping the public safe that Tyre Nichols would be with us today?"

  • "Was he not also entitled to the right to be safe? So when we talk about public safety, let us understand what it means in its truest form. Tyre Nichols should have been safe."

Harris, along with the Rev. Al Sharpton, called on Congress to pass the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act.

As the service began, a group of singers proceeded to the front of the church singing, "We love you, Tyre." Attendees joined in, AP reported.

4. Look up! A comet for the ages

A green comet will make space history and is expected to be at its closest point to Earth this week since the Stone Age, Axios' Kelly Tyko writes.

  • The comet — officially named Comet C/2022 E3 (ZTF) — was last seen in our skies 50,000 years ago.

NASA predicts it'll be brightest between now and tomorrow morning.

  • Set your alarms for early morning — during the less than one hour between moonset local time and when dawn begins. That small window of time should be when the comet is at its brightest.
