1 big thing: New crime trend

Juggers are targeting the distracted and the elderly, Axios' Russell Contreras reports.

How it works: Juggers wait in parking lots and watch for people to withdraw large sums of money from ATMs, or prey on folks juggling smartphones and car keys in parking lots or at home.

  • Suspected juggers also walk malls and computer stores to scout for large purchases.
  • The jugging can also take place if the victim leaves their car for a bite to eat and the juggers steal the money or a new laptop from the vehicle.

Between the lines: Darren White, a former Bernalillo County sheriff in New Mexico, said police give new trends names to identify specific groups committing crimes using fresh tactics.

  • "If adding this new name to it helps differentiate potential targets, then it's great. Even if it's just another name for old fashion muggings."

Brittney Griner intends "to play basketball for the WNBA's Phoenix Mercury this season," she said in her first official statement since coming home from Russia.

  • "I dug deep to keep my faith and it was the love from so many of you that helped keep me going," Griner said.
  • "From the bottom of my heart, thank you to everyone for your help."

🎅 4. Santa thief redemption

Local TV reporter Henry Coburn recently tweeted the "heartwarming" and redeeming story of a thief returning a Santa display he stole from a restaurant, Axios' Herb Scribner reports.

  • Coburn, a reporter with WSPA-TV in the Carolinas, went to a restaurant to interview the owner about the theft — only to discover the thief at the front of the restaurant.
  • "He is here to apologize, so I told him if he wants me to accept the apology, he has to talk to the camera and come clean," the owner told Coburn.

The thief said he felt bad for what happened and would do whatever it took to make it right," according to Coburn.

  • The owner won't be pressing charges, she told Coburn.
  • "This is her Christmas gift: forgiveness and the ability to rectify his mistakes," Coburn said.
