In the third of four blog posts on the challenges of advancing healthcare quality, a member of AHRQ's National Advisory Council highlights the myriad challenges of improving home healthcare. Reliance on home-based care accelerated following COVID-19. However, the technologies, systems, expectations and social understandings around home-based healthcare remain imperfect. Quality improvement efforts must begin by addressing fundamental questions: What are we trying to improve? What makes home healthcare unique? What elements of care should be considered, monitored, and measured? Going forward, efforts to enhance measurement must include patients and their families.
