Good afternoon: Today's PM — edited by Justin Green — is 369 words, a 1.5-minute read.

🚊1 big thing: Holiday strike alarm

The trains might not be running during the Christmas holidays, Axios Markets co-author Emily Peck reports.

Why it matters: Any disruption to freight rail service would be a blow to the supply chain recovery and the economy.

  • A long-lasting strike could even tip the country into recession, according to the American Chemistry Council.

Between the lines: Sick leave is a main sticking point, not pay.

  • Rank-and-file members are angry about how they've been treated in recent years — particularly during the pandemic.

What's next: The freight rail companies will start shutting down certain shipments ahead of a potential strike.

  • In the run-up to the labor deal brokered in September, the rail companies stopped shipments of all hazardous chemicals.
