The new year has already brought plenty of upheaval to the retail landscape. In the UK, Boohoo has acquired department store chain Debenhams, while Asos is currently the frontrunner to buy Topshop. As Tamison O'Connor explains, it's not their stores, but their brand recognition, popular websites and massive customer databases that makes Debenhams and Topshop attractive to digital players. Elsewhere, brands are racing to stay ahead of a reckoning on how they collect and use consumer data.
