YEAR IN FASHION

THE UPFRONT

The Business of Fashion will be taking a break between 24 December 2020 and 3 January 2021. In the meantime, explore our analysis from an unparalleled year for the global fashion industry. We wish you a happy holiday season and a great start to 2021.

Dear BoF Community,

After a harrowing year for retail, major changes are afoot. Dozens of retailers filed for bankruptcy in 2020, resulting in the closure of an estimated 25,000 stores. But amid the wreckage, the industry has been forced to adapt. For mall retailers, this means investing more in e-commerce as online shopping continues to make a bigger share of total sales, and some shopping centres close. In wholesale, brands and stores are feeling out a new status quo, as traditional department stores decline and a fierce battle for online spending takes shape, particularly among rival luxury marketplaces. Shopping habits have irrevocably changed. As consumers work from home indefinitely, they demand entertainment at their fingertips, a seamless shopping experience both online to off, and perpetual newness from their favorite brands. The road ahead will be tough. But those that emerge on the other side will be stronger, leaner and a delight to experience.
