How You 'Put on Your Socks' Can Make All the Difference

When John Wooden got to UCLA in 1948, the campus didn't even have an arena...
The Bruins men's basketball team played the first three seasons under Wooden at its practice facility. Then, UCLA had to make other plans due to fire-safety regulations.
For the next 14 seasons, the Bruins played "home" games all over the Los Angeles area.
The venues included Santa Monica City College and Venice High School. And for bigger games, UCLA played at Pan-Pacific Auditorium or Los Angeles Memorial Sports Arena.
The nomadic lifestyle didn't bother UCLA...
The Bruins won 22 out of 29 games in Wooden's first season as coach. A year later, they had 24 wins in 31 games.
Wooden and UCLA broke through for their first national championship in 1964. Then, they won it all again the next year.
The Bruins won an unprecedented 10 national championships in a 12-year stretch under Wooden. Their run of success included seven straight titles from 1967 to 1973.
UCLA finally got an on-campus arena, Pauley Pavilion, in 1965. And it has served as the Bruins' home for the past 60 years.
Wooden retired at age 64 after claiming his 10th national title in 1975. He finished with 620 wins in 767 games across 27 seasons at UCLA.
With a résumé like that, you might think Wooden devised all sorts of fancy plays and complex strategies to get an edge in games. After all, success doesn't come easy.
It's true that Wooden earned the nickname "Wizard of Westwood" for his coaching expertise. And he probably put in more hours perfecting his craft than anyone else.
But it all started with how Wooden approached the first day of practice each year...
It's a website that shows you the biggest potential jumps on 5,000 stocks – to the day – weeks before they occur. In 2024 alone, it would've pointed to gains of 250% in 38 days on TTWO... 101% in 10 days on WSM... 353% in 48 days on AON... and more, in studies with 83% backtested accuracy. On the surface, the two gentlemen joining forces today couldn't be more different. One spent his career helping the rich get richer, while the other has devoted himself to policing Wall Street. Now, they're putting aside their differences to alert Americans to a remarkable discovery that could make or break people's wealth – not only in 2025, but for the next decade. They're calling it "The Perfect Stock."
He taught his players how to put on their socks.
Seriously.
Wooden showed his players how to smooth out wrinkles around their little toes. Then, he moved on to the shoes. He taught the players how to lace them up tight and double-knot.
Wooden noticed that a lot of basketball players missed time due to blisters on their feet. And he didn't want to risk playing at a disadvantage over something so silly.
So he started with the basics – right down to the socks.
Wooden's approach wasn't flashy or exciting. But it worked.
His team mastered the basics first. Then, they took other necessary steps to dominate their competition.
Sure, it's hard to stick to the basics sometimes...
Multiple wars, an election, the Federal Reserve's next move, inflation, debt... It's enough to make your head spin as an investor.
But like Wooden's socks-first approach, it's important for you to focus on the basics...
By that, I mean you should ignore the big, scary headlines. Instead, stick to what's right in front of you with individual stocks...
Look at their recent performance relative to the S&P 500 Index. Follow their trends. And then, make smart decisions with your money based on what's happening.
Focusing on the basics helped Wooden win 10 national championships in a 12-year stretch. And it can be the key to building a winning portfolio over the long term.
Don't overthink your investment decisions.
Remember, it's not about predicting the next big crisis or market catalyst. It's about finding good stocks in any market environment.
That's how you find long-term success in the investing game.
Good investing,
