Air Force researchers used it to analyze high-resolution photographs. The system could run pattern-matching algorithms to quickly scan through thousands of photos and radar images. At the time, the Condor Cluster became the U.S. Department of Defense's most powerful computer. And estimates put it as the world's 33rd most powerful computer. Most notably... it was made of 1,760 PlayStation 3 video-game consoles. Yes, you read that correctly... Find the names and tickers here. The PlayStation 3 became a huge hit with computer scientists when it launched in late 2006. That's because it cost less than $500 and came with a powerful computer processor. It was also compatible with the Linux operating system. That meant users could connect a bunch of consoles. They just needed to write some basic code to make them work together. In the end, the Condor Cluster cost $2 million to build. That might seem like a lot at first. But a similarly powered computer made from off-the-shelf parts would've cost 10 times as much. AFRL had the biggest PlayStation 3 supercomputer. But many others jumped on this trend as well... A University of Massachusetts Dartmouth astrophysics professor built one out of 176 PlayStation 3 consoles. He used it to run simulations of black holes. Another computer-science professor at North Carolina State University created one in early 2007 using just eight PlayStation 3 consoles. And as he said at the time...   Scientific computing is just number crunching, which the [PlayStation 3s] are very good at given the Cell processor and deploying them in a cluster. The era of the PlayStation 3 supercomputer didn't last. System developer Sony eventually removed the feature that allowed users to install Linux on its consoles. But importantly... the firmware update didn't kill the world of high-powered computing. The world's fastest supercomputer is now at the U.S. Department of Energy's Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee. It's called the Frontier. The Frontier runs at more than 1.2 million "teraflops" per second. (A teraflop is 1 trillion individual calculations.) That's about 2,400 times faster than the Condor Cluster. Today, data centers (of all sizes) have taken over. They're the new kings of "cluster computing." And they're bigger and faster than anyone could have imagined a decade ago. Put simply... the growth in supercomputing is happening at an exponential rate. In turn, data centers are growing at a similar pace. They're springing up all over the world. Today, the world has roughly 11,000 of these facilities. And about half of them are in the U.S. Instead of PlayStation 3 consoles, data centers house thousands of servers... These servers work together to meet our growing computing demands. They handle a huge amount of Internet traffic, deliver applications, and store unfathomable amounts of data. Folks, my point is simple... It's easy to look at the consumer side of what we're calling "AI" these days and hand-wave it away. After all, sometimes it doesn't work right. And other times, we're not sure what to do with the "products." But the fact is, Big Tech is growing at a blistering pace... Just about 15 years ago, the U.S. military used video-game consoles to crunch numbers. Today, regular folks have access to AI tools via supercomputing data centers that the government could only dream of in the past.
