Understanding NSG Subregulatory Guidance Tools

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services' (CMS) National Standards Group (NSG), on behalf of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), enforces Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) Administrative Simplification requirements related to transaction standards, code sets, unique identifiers, and operating rules.

To assist HIPAA covered entities in complying with these standards and regulatory requirements, NSG offers a line of subregulatory guidance tools. These tools include HIPAA Administrative Simplification Guidance Letters, Information Bulletins, and Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs). Each tool is described below:

  • Guidance Letters: include important guidance about NSG's interpretation of the HIPAA Administrative Simplification laws and regulations, and their application to common situations and industry practices.
  • Information Bulletins: share information, address operational and technical issues, and highlight best practices, initiatives, or related efforts.
  • FAQs: provide answers on existing statute, regulation and policy, or technical or operational issues, to which we will continue to respond.
