The CME FedWatch Tool has the chances of us staying in the current 5.25% to 5.5% range at 99%. The chances of us staying in the same range after the May FOMC meeting are at 94.1%.  Powell said “we are not far” from gaining confidence that inflation is heading to a sustainable target of 2%, the Fed’s mandated goal.  And since that time, a few damning things have happened… The Consumer and Producer Price indexes — an inflation gauge used by the Fed — came in above estimates.  Retail spending — which makes up two-thirds of the U.S. economy — slowed.  And unemployment rose to 3.9%, which is higher than expected.  The two main things I’m focused on today is whether he talks about pushing rate cuts back to the fourth quarter, and how many cuts he expects to happen over the next 12 months.  I don’t think he’ll do a full 180 because he’s under political pressure to act, so it will be interesting to see how things shake out later today — get your popcorn ready!
