March 5, 2024 I'm writing today to update you on recent efforts at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to revise and enhance some processes related to two types of grant applications: - Research Project Grants (RPGs) and
- Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award (NRSA) fellowships
To our first topic: In a blog post in October 2023, Dr. Martina Schmidt, director of the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) Division of Extramural Activities (DEA), provided the background and goals for a simplified peer review framework for RPGs. The changes, which she summarized, follow a period during which NIH carefully gathered and discussed input from many sources. NIH is implementing this revised review framework over the course of the next year for all RPG applications with receipt deadlines of January 25, 2025, and beyond. | Inna Belfer, M.D., Ph.D. and Hye-Sook Kim, Ph.D.
February 28, 2024 Are you interested in learning more about how the brain removes waste products through the glymphatic and meningeal lymphatic systems? Can manipulation of these systems help prevent or treat devastating disorders such as Alzheimer's disease (AD)? A new Nature special volume on this topic features two publications from investigators whose research was funded by the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH), Jonathan Kipnis, Ph.D., of Washington University in St. Louis, and Li-Huei Tsai, Ph.D., at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.  A recent study showed that noninvasive Gamma ENtrainment Using Sensory stimuli (GENUS) reduced the accumulation of amyloid in mice models of Alzheimer's disease (AD) through the brain's glymphatic system. The study, conducted by researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Westlake University in China, and Boston University, was partially funded by the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health and published in the journal Nature. |  A new investigation provides evidence that neurons in the brain act as master organizers for clearing the brain of metabolic waste and that they do so by synchronizing their actions to create large rhythmic waves in the interstitial fluid (ISF) during sleep. The study, recently published in Nature, was conducted by researchers from Washington University in St. Louis and partially funded by the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health. |  February 2024 Clinical Digest Conventional treatment for high cholesterol levels consists of therapeutic lifestyle and, if necessary, cholesterol-lowering medicine. Natural products have also been studied for their possible effects on cholesterol levels. This issue provides information on "what the science says" about the effectiveness and safety of several dietary supplements reportedly used by people with high cholesterol, including soy, red clover, red yeast rice, sterols/stanols, flaxseed and flaxseed oil, garlic, bergamot, and green tea. | Resources for Researchers Upcoming Events March 18, 2024, 10:00 a.m.-12:30 p.m. ET; Virtual The 2024 Annual Emotional Well-Being (EWB) Investigator Meeting will take place on March 18, 2024. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) welcomes researchers and the public to attend the livestreamed open session to learn about six research networks and their efforts in advancing the science of EWB and to discuss remaining research gaps and opportunities. In addition, Eric Garland, Ph.D., will present the keynote speech "Mindfulness-Oriented Recovery Enhancement Builds Emotional Well-Being by Restructuring Reward, Meaning, and Self." April 9-13, 2024; Cleveland, Ohio The International Congress on Integrative Medicine and Health will take place in Cleveland, Ohio at the Hilton Cleveland Downtown. It will bring together leading figures from various fields to showcase recent scientific advancements in integrative medicine and health. The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) will lead a variety of sessions at ICIMH, including topics important to researchers at different stages of their careers. June 10-11, 2024 The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health is partnering with the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences to hold a 2-day workshop to stimulate discussion about and interest in researching ways to reduce and mitigate the effects of endocrine-disrupting chemicals in people who have been exposed. "Complementary and Integrative Interventions To Prevent and Mitigate the Effects of Endocrine-Disrupting Chemicals" will take place June 10–11, 2024. Save the date!
