1 big thing: Princess Kate says she has cancer

Kate Middleton, Princess of Wales, has been diagnosed with cancer and is receiving chemotherapy, she announced in a video today.

πŸ“Œ Catch up quick: The princess hasn't been seen in public for months, prompting widespread speculation and palace intrigue.

  • She resolved those mysteries today, saying she was diagnosed with cancer following an abdominal surgery in January. She's now in the early stages of chemotherapy, she said.

"This, of course, came as a huge shock," she said in the video. "William and I have been doing everything we can to process and manage this privately."

Reminder: Buckingham Palace announced last month that King Charles has cancer. It has not disclosed what type of cancer he has, or what stage it is in.

Russia's Federal Security Service said 40 people died and more than 100 were wounded in an attack today at a Moscow concert hall.

  • Plumes of black smoke were rising from the 6,000-person concert hall, and videos taken inside the venue included the sound of gunshots and people screaming, per The New York Times.

The attack comes shortly after Russian President Vladimir Putin cemented his grip on power, and amid the ongoing war in Ukraine.

3. Catch me up on the GOP's disarray

  1. πŸ“œ Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) filed a motion to vacate the House speaker's chair — the first step toward a potential vote to remove Speaker Mike Johnson. She said she'll force that vote if Johnson brings Ukraine aid to the floor.
  2. πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡¦ Democrats may save Johnson if the vote actually occurs — but may want a vote on Ukraine aid in return.
  3. πŸ‘‹ Rep. Mike Gallagher (R-Wis.) said he'll resign from Congress on April 19. Republicans will have only a one-seat majority once that happens, which means Johnson — or any speaker — will find it all but impossible to pass anything significant without Democratic votes, further angering conservatives.

4. 🌸 RIP Stumpy

Stumpy — a short, hollow cherry blossom tree — will soon be uprooted from its home in D.C.'s Tidal Basin, Axios D.C. co-author Mimi Montgomery reports.

  • Stumpy has developed a cult fandom around the D.C. area, a beloved misfit among the rows of stately trees.

πŸ™ Why Stumpy mattered: Stumpy looks this way because too much water can hurt a tree's roots, and the Tidal Basin floods twice a day now due to its sinking seawall and climate change.

  • Several trees are being removed to accommodate the construction of a new seawall. 274 new cherry trees will be planted to replace them.
