Hi, This week, people who live on the East Coast of the United States have had to grapple with one of the plagues of the climate crisis: the eerie, dangerous effects of wildfire smoke. Although the current fires are in Canada, New York City had the worst air quality of any major city in the world earlier this week, according to air quality technology company IQAir. Interpreting the Air Quality Index and knowing how to change your behavior can be challenging. But the explainers that Vox reporters have published this week make it easier. Below, check out some recent work from our journalists that will help you understand what's happening, why, and how to navigate it. - Start with our introductory explainer, "Why some of the US has the most polluted air in the world right now," by Future Perfect fellow Rachel DuRose. She gets into the science of why these fires are so severe.
- This is a really helpful short video from producer Coleman Lowndes on how to read the Air Quality Index report.
- Next, I recommend reading this step-by-step guide on what to do when air quality hits unhealthy levels, by senior climate reporter Rebecca Leber.
- Keren Landman, a trained physician and our senior public health reporter, has two great pieces. The first explains who is most at risk when air quality is poor and when to seek care. The second walks through your options for protecting your indoor air when the outside air is so bad.
- Finally, correspondent Umair Irfan published a piece in the fall of 2021 explaining the tools we have to mitigate the risk of massive wildfires worldwide. Sadly, it's still relevant.
