Happy Thursday afternoon. Today's PM — edited by Kate Nocera — is 536 words, a 2-minute read. Thanks to Sheryl Miller for the copy edit.

💰1 big thing: America's priciest cities
Data: Bureau of Labor Statistics. (Not seasonally adjusted.) Chart: Axios Visuals.

How much you're getting squeezed by inflation depends entirely on your ZIP code.

  • The Miami, Phoenix, Seattle and Atlanta metro areas had the highest annual inflation rate increases as of December 2022, according to the latest Consumer Price Index from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Rising housing costs and increased energy prices are driving inflation in those areas, Axios' Kelly Tyko reports.

Relief could be on the way for some regions — including Phoenix, Seattle and Atlanta — due to "the rapid turnaround from a hot housing market," said Greg McBride, chief financial analyst at Bankrate.com.

🥊 Reality check: McBride said the local CPI is still rising in the Miami area, which also includes Fort Lauderdale and Broward County, because "the housing market is holding up better relative to other previously hot markets."

  • The meteoric rise in food prices slowed slightly in December.
  • Overall consumer prices are still up more than 10% year-over-year.

2. 🥶 A REALLY cold front

The air mass across northern New England this weekend will be the coldest in the Northern Hemisphere, with the possible exception of a portion of Siberia, Axios' Andrew Freedman writes.

  • The potentially record-breaking cold snap will start tonight and last into Sunday.

Threat level: With wind chills forecast to reach -10°F in New York City and -30° in Boston — and as low as -60° in northern Maine on Saturday morning — the cold could be deadly for anyone caught outside for extended periods.

  • The bottom line: Stay inside.

4.🔍 Tracking Tom Brady
Left: Tom Brady's Instagram. Right: Martin Vassolo/Axios

Axios Miami's eagle-eyed co-author Martin Vassolo and his wife, Marta, thought the background in Tom Brady's second retirement video looked awfully familiar.

  • Turns out, it was about a mile away from their apartment on a public beach in the tiny town of Surfside where Martin grew up.

"Marta was first to realize it was south of 94th street. She might as well have a degree in Google Maps sleuthing," Martin writes.

  • Martin then found the section of sand where Brady filmed his video.
  • "After several minutes, I found the perfect angle, with my head framed by the Azure and Solimar condo buildings."

The beach is within walking distance to the Indian Creek mansion that Brady and ex-wife Gisele Bündchen reportedly bought in 2020, which is being renovated.
