According to investigators, the shooting of a teacher on Friday afternoon at an elementary school in Newport News, Virginia, by a 6-year-old first-grader after a classroom dispute renewed parents' requests for increased classroom safety and supervision. Abigail Zwerner, a first-grade teacher at Richneck Elementary School, was shot by the 6-year-old kid. Following the event, she was taken by ambulance to Riverside Regional Medical Center with serious injuries. The teacher had improved and was classified in stable condition. The Newport News Police Department stated that the chief had spoken with her and her family the next day. "Chief Drew asked that you continue to keep her in your thoughts and prayers," police said. A day earlier, the chief had described the teacher's injuries as life-threatening. How does a nightmare like this even happen? (read more) | |

Man, I picked one heck of a week to take a vacation! After a lot of drama, Rep. Kevin McCarthy is officially the Speaker of the House. Notice how I just called it drama and not "an embarrassing disaster?" That's because I'm not a fan of doing something fast over doing something right. What about you? Did it make you uncomfortable? Were you glued to the vote counts? Did you think the whole process made any sense? Find out why I'm a fan of the lengthy debate and negotiating that went down, even if it hasn't happened like that since before the Civil War and why it was worth every minute of delay. The Nasdaq Composite might finally be looking to gain some momentum in 2023, with investors desperately wanting a reversal from 2022's horrible performance. Sizable gains on Friday helped to build more positive sentiment, and the bullish move continued on Monday morning, with the Nasdaq rising 1.5% at midmorning. Big-name companies usually get the headlines, but sometimes, news of mergers and acquisitions pushes a little-known company into the spotlight. That is true of not one but two small-cap stocks today. An art teacher at a suburban New Jersey middle school has been arrested after he overdosed in front of students. Frank Thompson, a 57-year-old teacher at Roosevelt Intermediate School in Westfield, was found unconscious and unresponsive in a second-floor classroom just after 9 a.m. on Nov. 29, 2022, according to the Westfield Police Department. Police said Thompson was first observed in distress by students and was being treated by a school nurse when officers arrived. During a police investigation that followed the overdose in the fall, authorities say they discovered "a quantity of a suspected controlled substance" and drug paraphernalia in the closet of Thompson's classroom. Thompson was charged with possession of a controlled dangerous substance, allegedly for fentanyl, possession of drug paraphernalia, and endangering the welfare of children. (read more) |
