As the outlook for the global economy continues to deteriorate, Amazon says it plans to fire more than 18,000 workers. According to a memo CEO Andy Jassy distributed to staff, several teams will be impacted, including the human resources division and Amazon Stores. "Companies that last a long time go through different phases. They're not in heavy people expansion mode every year," he said. Jassy had said in November that job cuts at the e-commerce giant would continue into early 2023. Multiple outlets reported in the fall that Amazon had planned to cut around 10,000 employees. While he may not have all of the support he needs to win Speaker of the House yet, Kevin McCarthy added an influential millionaire to his corner today. Since Tuesday, the House has been holding votes to elect a new speaker, but after the third day into the process, there really seems to be no end in sight. Elon Musk tweeted Thursday that he believes McCarthy should get the coveted Speaker of the House position. President Biden used a major White House speech on Thursday to announce expanded border measures, in advance of his first-ever visit to the besieged southern border the following week — as his administration struggles to deal with an unprecedented influx of migrants. Biden announced the expansion of a Venezuelan humanitarian parole program to include Haitians, Cubans, and Nicaraguans. This program will allow 30,000 people per month from all four counties to be paroled into the United States for two years, provided they have a financial sponsor and meet other requirements. Those who attempt illegal entry are disqualified from the program. In addition, the administration will triple the resettlement of refugees from Latin American and Caribbean nations, with a goal of up to 20,000 refugees for FY 2023 and FY 2024. A video of a woman in Hawaii receiving a surprise proposal on New Year's Eve in a club has gone viral, according to a report in Independent. The clip was captured by a participant and uploaded to TikTok on Monday, the news source added. The woman stated that the proposal was "the most awkward ever." The entire party was halted so that one man could propose to the woman while she was attending a party. Her boyfriend calls her to the stage so that he can propose. Forty-year-old Dharmesh A. Patel was arrested on Monday after he intentionally drove his Tesla off the side of a California cliff on Monday. Patel, who is a radiologist in Mission Hills, California, had his wife and two children in the car at the time of the incident. Patel's children are 7 and 4-years-old. Shaun Bouyea of the California Highway Patrol assisted in the rescue and said that he hadn't seen a crash, or a recovery, quite like that before. "I've seen people go over cliffs and survive, but never from [300 feet]. Also, it's unusual for that many people to be in the car and to have them all survive," Bouyea stated.
