Good afternoon: Today's PM — edited by Justin Green — is 443 words, a 1.5-minute read.

⚡️ Breaking: Sen. Joe Manchin joined every Senate Republican this afternoon in voting against advancing a bill that would forbid most state restrictions on abortion.

  • Manchin, along with GOP Sens. Lisa Murkowski and Susan Collins, says he would support a less expansive bill codifying Roe v Wade.

🚨 1 big thing: Inflation siren

Hope is quickly fading that inflation will go away anytime soon.

  • Why it matters: The spreading of inflation pressures away from goods and into services is worrisome, Axios chief economic correspondent Neil Irwin reports.

In April, prices rose 0.6% for rent, 0.5% for medical services, and 3.1% for transportation services.

  • The Consumer Price Index rose 0.3% in April and was up 8.3% from a year earlier. The previous year-over-year inflation had been 8.5%.

The new numbers come as President Biden pledges to make fighting inflation his "top domestic priority" — and the Fed embarks on a period of rapid interest rate increases meant to quash price pressures.

  • Many economists believe that March will turn out to be the peak in year-over-year inflation measures and that price pressures will diminish gradually from here.
  • But the new April numbers show that underlying inflation pressures remain very much alive.

Renewable power growth — led by wind and solar —is on pace to set a record this year, Ben Geman writes in Axios Generate.

  • An International Energy Agency report says 8% global growth is expected in 2022 — a significant boost over the previous forecast.
