The next trucker protest crisis is brewing south of the border, with Mexican truckers blockading bridges amid growing fears over fruit and vegetable shortages.

The big picture: New safety inspection rules by Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) have slashed commercial traffic as much as 60%, Axios Latino editor Astrid Galván reports.

  • Mexico is the U.S.'s biggest source of agricultural imports.
  • "Your inspection protocol is not stopping illegal immigration," Texas Agriculture Commissioner (R) Sid Miller warned in an open letter to Abbott. "It is stopping food from getting to grocery store shelves."

At least four border crossings have been blockaded by Mexican truck drivers who say the rules threaten their pay, Reuters reports.

🚨 Breaking: Abbott this afternoon unveiled a deal that would lift the rules at one of the 13 affected commercial crossings between Texas and Mexico, The Texas Tribune reports.

  • Abbott and Mexico's Nuevo León Gov. Samuel Alejandro Garcia Sepulveda agreed to have Mexican police do inspections, ending the Texas checks at the Colombia-Laredo bridge.

Shortly after officially naming Frank R. James as a suspect this morning in the Brooklyn subway mass shooting, police said he'd been arrested in Manhattan's East Village.

  • He'll face terrorism-related charges for yesterday's attack where 10 people were shot.
  • "My fellow New Yorkers, we got him," Mayor Eric Adams said.

James "appears to have posted dozens of videos on social media in recent years — lengthy rants in which he expressed a range of harshly bigoted views," the N.Y. Times reports.
