The company recently announced that it is no longer trying to build its high-speed vacuum-tube Hyperloop system for passenger transportation. Due to the move, the company laid off half of its staff.    Supply chain issues and the pandemic were cited as the reason for the decision. But the company isn't giving up on the new transportation technology entirely. Instead, Virgin Hyperloop will focus on completing the system, but for cargo and freight transportation only.    Early plans for the system include creating an inland port that would allow freight to be moved inland prior to being sorted, so it could be processed away from cargo ships, hopefully freeing up sea ports more.
