1 big thing: Border hugs

Packed flights, long lines and lots of hugs: Families reunited today as the U.S. eased nearly two years of severe border restrictions.

  • "Today America is open for business," Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo told Reuters.

The big picture: Today's reunions include spouses who haven't hugged in months, grandparents whose grandchildren doubled in age, and uncles and aunts who haven't met their nieces and nephews, AP reports.

Flights from Europe are packed and are expected to stay crowded through the holidays, said Virgin Atlantic CEO Shai Weiss, per Reuters.

  • A big part of that is tourism. The U.S. is requiring proof of a vaccine approved by the World Health Organization and a recent negative test.

In El Paso, people held stuffed animals and grinned as they waited to clear customs at the Bridge of the Americas from Mexico (below).

4. Obama to the world: America is back

Former President Obama told the climate summit in Scotland that the U.S. "is back" and "once again engaged" in leading the fight against climate change, following four years of "hostility toward climate science" from the Trump administration.

"The thing we have going for us is that humanity has done hard things before. I believe we can do hard things again. ... I guarantee you every victory will be incomplete. Sometimes we will be forced to settle for imperfect compromises. But at least they advance the ball down the field."
