Well, Good Morning!
Let's take a look at what the day has in store for us.
So, let's dig in, shall we?
Here's What You Need To Know... Iraqi prime minister survives drone assassination attempt Iran-backed militants refused to accept last month's parliamentary election results in Iraq, which created the country's first parliament. The election was originally scheduled for next year, but was pushed forward in the wake of an anti-government protest in Baghdad during which hundreds died while demanding the prime minister step down. Iraq remains fragile under threats from ISIS and regional tensions.
There was another protest in Iraq on Friday during which at least one person died. Supporters of pro-Iranian groups, which suffered large losses in the polls, threw stones at security forces, who fired tear gas and shot in the air to disperse the crowd. Gunshots could also be heard at the protest site.
The pro-Iran movement culminated in a drone strike on the Iraqi prime minister on Sunday. At least six of his security personnel were injured in the strike on his residence. President Biden addressed the situation by reaffirming the United States' support for the Iraqi democratic process and the prime minister himself.
8 people are dead, and a 10-year-old is in critical condition, following a crowd surge at a music festival Eight people, including two teens, died while attending a music festival Friday night. According to authorities, the deaths occurred as "the crowd began to compress toward the front of the stage" while Travis Scott was performing. Twenty-five people were hospitalized, and a 10-year-old was in critical condition after the incident at the Astroworld music festival. And another 300-plus attendees were treated on the scene.
Scott, who paused, but never completely stopped, the show, spoke to his devastation in a tweet. He said: "My prayers go out to the families and all those impacted by what happened at Astroworld Festival. Houston PD has my total support as they continue to look into the tragic loss of life. I am committed to working together with the Houston community to heal and support the families in need."
Some of the concert goers shared the horror that unfolded that night. One person said that they had "to look up to the sky just to breathe before the show even started," while another recalled a pile of people screaming.
"People at the bottom were definitely suffocating," one witness said. "I thought I was going to die. It was literally like survival of the fittest. There was no escape. I've never seen grown men fighting for their life like that."
Breaking: Hackers have breached defense and other sensitive sectors, security firm says Cyber security espionage is a growing problem globally. Presidents Biden and Trump have both sought to curtail the efforts of international hackers before the United States incurs too much damage. However, due to the tacit permission of Russian President Putin to carry out cyber attacks on the United States, and the pandemic causing an infrastructure slow-down, we are seeing more hacks of greater significance.
President Biden may not have succeeded in his plan to prevent attacks before hackers got too bold. During his first meeting with Putin as president, Biden told the press that he gave Putin a list of vital infrastructure in the United States; this was meant to act as a hard line. The aim was to deter attacks on that vital infrastructure by threatening diplomatic consequences.
Many condemned that move by Biden, although it's worth noting that due to Russia's espionage capabilities, Putin likely already knew which sectors would provoke the United States into a counter attack. But with tensions only barely shy of Cold War-levels, the public is growing increasingly nervous that the United States is on the brink of conflict with Russia or China… or both.
Now, security firm Palo Alto Networks has shared with CNN that suspected foreign hackers have breached nine organizations in especially vulnerable sectors such as defense, energy, health care, and technology. At least one of those organizations is in the United States; however, the magnitude of the attack means the location does not matter as much as the principle. Here's what you need to know.
