BEDFORD HEIGHTS, Ohio — Shontel Brown defeated Nina Turner in a special primary election for Congress on Tuesday, a victory for establishment Democrats over the party's combative liberal wing.
Turner, who co-chaired Sen. Bernie Sanders' 2020 presidential campaign, conceded defeat. "For this campaign on this night, we will not cross the river," she told supporters at her primary-night watch party.
Turner began the race as the favorite to succeed Marcia Fudge, who left the House to become President Joe Biden's housing secretary. But Brown and her allies, including prominent members of the Congressional Black Caucus, attacked Turner for her past statements criticizing Democratic leaders like Biden and Hillary Clinton, who also backed Brown.
Brown will face Republican nominee Laverne Gore in the Nov. 2 special election — though the district, which includes parts of Cleveland and Akron, is overwhelmingly Democratic.
