Spotlight on surveys

Australian employers are being contacted to find out how they train their staff, and how effective this training is at meeting their skill needs. The Survey of Employers’ Use and Views of the VET System runs every 2 years and interviews around 9,000 employers each survey.
Survey results will be released in October 2021.

RTOs across the country are being asked to support a new survey of current VET students’ training experiences. The new VET Student Experience Survey, developed jointly by ASQA, the Department of Education, Skills and Employment and NCVER, will seek the views of around 40,000 students undertaking training across more than 500 RTOs. The information captured will complement the annual National Student Outcomes Survey findings.
Selected RTOs will be contacted from April 2021 and are encouraged to help facilitate this new student survey.

Latest data from the National Student Outcomes Survey, Australia’s largest survey of VET students, is available. Close to one million students who finished nationally recognised training in Australia in 2019 were asked about their satisfaction with training, employment, and further study outcomes, and how the COVID-19 pandemic has affected them.
RTOs, visit our Portal to view the eligibility requirements and details on how to access your free individual report.

The 2021 National Student Outcomes Survey will open in June 2021 for students who completed a VET qualification, program or subject during 2020.

Adaptability and learning skills

The recently updated National Skills Overview provides an analysis of industry skills needs along with the factors and trends affecting skill demand at a national level. The top priority generic skill identified in IRC Skills Forecasts is Adaptability and learning skills.

The three main adaptability related skills, which were identified most frequently by industry were:

  • Emotional intelligence
  • Resilience, stress tolerance and flexibility
  • Self-management.

When considering internet job advertisements, adaptability skills were most frequently requested in managerial and professional positions, and least often for labourers, machinery operators and drivers. Many of these advertisements sought out employees who could cope with or lead change, as well as those with an ability to learn quickly on the job.
