ROBINHOOD ADDS IN-HOUSE LOBBYISTS: Robinhood, the online trading app at the center of last month's retail trading frenzy, has registered its first in-house lobbyists as it comes under scrutiny from Washington lawmakers and regulators. Beth Zorc, a former Housing and Urban Development attorney and senior staffer on the Senate Banking and House Financial Services committees, and Lucas Moskowitz, who served as chief of staff to former SEC Chair Jay Clayton, will lobby on various bills relating to financial transaction taxes, according to a disclosure filing.

— That's in addition to the four outside lobbying shops Robinhood retained back in August to which it has already collectively paid $275,000: Blue Ridge Law & Policy, the Daly Consulting Group, Thorn Run Partners and the Williams Group.

— The platform has also brought on Mary Elizabeth Taylor to lead its D.C. office as head of external affairs, Playbook reported this morning. Taylor served as the assistant secretary of State for legislative affairs in the Trump administration until June, when she resigned over President Donald Trump's handling of the George Floyd protests.

MORE NEW BUSINESS: TheGROUP's Sudafi Henry, who previously served as President Joe Biden's director of legislative affairs when he was vice president, signed the social media monitoring company Dataminr as a client a few weeks before the inauguration, newly filed disclosures show. The company, which tracks real-time data and has secured contracts with the federal government entities including the FBI, TSA and the Air Force, helped law enforcement monitor the racial justice protests that took place this summer, according to The Intercept.

— Henry is the service's first registered lobbyist, according to a PI analysis of disclosure filings. He'll lobby on "general issues pertaining to computer software generated real-time event updates, risk mitigation efforts and crisis management," according to the filing. Dataminr is the fourth new client Henry has picked up since the election in November, along with Lyft, Abbott Labs and the American Health Care Association.

— The Florida-centric law and lobbying firm Becker & Poliakoff has signed seven new clients, including the Broward County Sheriff's Office for "criminal justice funding and public safety issues," according to a disclosure. Conglomerate company 3M, which manufactures N95 face masks, has hired Becker's Bert Gómez, Omar Franco, a former chief of staff to Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart (R-Fla.) and Anthony Bedell, a former Transportation Department official, to lobby on issues relating to the Defense Production Act, which Biden invoked last month in an effort to ramp up the country's vaccine and mask supply.

A message from the American Civil Liberties Union, Inc.:

Abortion is essential, time-sensitive health care. But outdated FDA restrictions on medication abortion are forcing patients and their families to risk exposure to COVID-19 in order to access it.
The Biden-Harris administration must listen to medical experts and let patients safely access abortion care by mail. Learn more.

Good afternoon and welcome to PI, where we're watching closely a readout of Biden's meeting with business leaders this afternoon on coronavirus relief, including Chamber CEO Tom Donohue, Walmart's Doug McMillon and JPMorgan's Jamie Dimon. FLYING IN (VIRTUALLY): The International Health, Racquet & Sportsclub Association and Community Gyms Coalition are ramping up pressure on lawmakers to include targeted relief for the fitness industry in their next relief plan, meeting virtually with more than half a dozen offices on the Hill over the next two days to lobby for the GYMS Act, which was introduced last week. Over 20 gym and fitness studio owners will meet with staff of Reps. John Katko (R-N.Y.), Jim Costa (D-Calif.), Abigail Spanberger (D-Va.), Brendan Boyle (D-Pa.), Vicente Gonzalez (D-Texas) and Adam Kinzinger (R-Ill.), as well as staff for House leadership, members of the Small Business Committee and the Problem Solvers Caucus, according to the group.

SEBELIUS JOINS CANNABIS ROUNDTABLE: Kathleen Sebelius, who served as the Obama administration's first Health and Human Services secretary, has been tapped as a co-chair of the marijuana industry group the National Cannabis Roundtable, our Paul Demko reports. Former House Speaker John Boehner is the group's other co-chair, giving the roundtable bipartisan heft as Democratic control of Washington boosts the industry's optimism for more cannabis-friendly policy at the federal level, though likely in a more piecemeal fashion.

— The announcement comes a day after some of the world's largest cannabis businesses and advocacy groups formed a new coalition, the U.S. Cannabis Council. The group will focus on "securing federal reforms that advance social equity and promote fair, safe, and well-regulated markets nationwide as states continue legalizing cannabis at a rapid rate," according to a press release.

HOW THE HOSPITAL LOBBY IS SEIZING THE MOMENT: "The hospital business is booming on Capitol Hill like never before," STAT's Rachel Cohrs reports. "Lawmakers showered the industry with more than $275 billion last year, and handed hospitals wins even on seemingly unrelated issues. And Democrats' agenda will almost certainly be better for their bottom lines." The coronavirus pandemic "transformed the industry's image in Washington, where large health care systems have long been vilified as corporate profit mongers instead of community caregivers. Now, more than two dozen lobbyists and consultants told STAT that they are keenly aware of just how much power the industry has accrued — and are prepared to seize the moment."

LINCOLN PROJECT RAMPS UP THE PRESSURE ON CORPORATIONS: Anti-Trump group The Lincoln Project is keeping up the pressure on corporate America over its donations to Republicans who objected to certifying the Electoral College results last month, launching a six-figure ad buy today on the nation's business networks CNBC, Bloomberg TV and Fox Business, Morning Money reports.

— The spot is spliced with footage of the deadly insurrection at the Capitol last month, arguing that the recipients of a company's political contributions are intertwined with their brand. It targets not only lawmakers who voted against certification of the election results, but Republicans like Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell and Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) who did not, and comes as Republicans appear certain to acquit Trump in a Senate trial for his role in the attack.

HOW ALAN DERSHOWITZ SECURED CLEMENCY FOR HIS CLIENTS: The New York Times' Ken Vogel and Nicholas Confessore examine the clemency advocacy of Trump ally and attorney Alan Dershowitz , who "emerged as a highly sought-after and often influential intermediary as Mr. Trump decided who would benefit from his pardon powers." According to the Times, "many of Mr. Dershowitz's clients got what they wanted before Mr. Trump left office."

— Dershowitz, who defended Trump during his first impeachment trial, "played a role in at least 12 clemency grants, including two pardons, which wipe out convictions, and 10 commutations, which reduce prison sentences, while also helping to win a temporary reprieve from sanctions for an Israeli mining billionaire." He "cast his defense of Mr. Trump and his clemency efforts as a natural extension of his work defending individual rights against a justice system that could be harsh and unfair."

A message from the American Civil Liberties Union, Inc.:

Medication abortion is safe, effective, and legal. But out of 20,000 FDA-approved drugs, it is the only one patients are forced to pick up in a clinical setting even though they can take it at home.

Medical organizations like the American Medical Association, American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, and American Academy of Family Physicians agree that the FDA's requirement that patients pick up medication abortion in person is unnecessary -- and dangerous for patients and their families during the pandemic.

We agree with the Biden-Harris administration: it's time to put science before politics. That's why the Biden-Harris administration should let patients access medication abortion by mail, just like thousands of other FDA-approved drugs. Learn more.
