This is probably gonna sound weird…
A while back, a student asked if I had any successful students who were musicians.
It was right after I wrote the blog post about the athlete's mindset. (I'll link to it below.)
Anyway, I told him I didn't think so. But I asked the guy why.
He said top musicians do something a lot like top traders.
He told me he'd been a pro musician for over 20 years.
He said all the best musicians he'd played with over the years had several things in common with my top students.
But he said, "There's one thing so similar I can't stop thinking about it."
What was it?
He said they recorded every rehearsal and performance. Then they'd hang out afterward and listen.
When I asked him why, he said it was "the fastest way to make progress."
By listening to recordings and picking things apart, they knew what was working. They could refine the feel of the music.
Over the years, the more musicians who recorded themselves, the better the band.
