Elissa Slotkin defeats Mike Rogers to keep Democratic control of critical Michigan Senate seat

Rep. Elissa Slotkin, a centrist Democrat who flipped a GOP-held House seat in 2018, has defeated former Rep. Mike Rogers after a vigorous campaign to keep Michigan's Senate seat in Democratic hands, The Associated Press projected.

Both Slotkin and Rogers, who once led the House Intelligence Committee, come from national security backgrounds and held similar versions of the same House seat. Slotkin is poised to succeed retiring Sen. Debbie Stabenow (D-Mich.) in one of the most hotly contested seats this cycle.

Slotkin questioned whether Rogers could be trusted to protect access to abortion throughout the campaign — and hit the former House GOP member over his move to Florida after leaving Congress.
