Your Saturday Stoic Review — Week of February 12 - 18
PASSAGE OF THE WEEK:
The status quo doesn't like people who buck it. No, the status quo contrives to apply pressure and persuasion on us, to get us to go along. It tries to change us, tries to lead us away from those pesky virtues of courage and temperance and justice and wisdom. We have to be strong like Cato. We have to resist.
In a recent video on the Daily Stoic YouTube Channel, Ryan Holiday discusses how by challenging ourselves every day like the Stoics (check out The Daily Stoic Challenge Deck if you're looking for ideas), we can escape the "velvet rut" of comfort, be ready for whatever fate has in store for us, and begin to live life on our terms:
"Edison said that 'we pick up the heavy end first', and that's the idea: you do the hard thing first. And then once you've done that, you've crossed it off, you've made progress, not only will you have momentum for the rest of the day, but even if you don't, you've already won — you've already made a dent in things."
In a recent episode of The Daily Stoic Podcast, Ryan Holiday speaks with economic and social historian Colin Elliott about the societal response to the Covid-19 pandemic, the importance of accountability and learning from mistakes, and how Marcus Aurelius' Meditations can help us respond to crises:
"It's just a level of sobriety and honesty about death from a man who constantly faced the possibility that he was going to die — whether from illness, some German invading his camp, somebody stabbing him in the back, some senator unhappy with him, etc. He's willing to think rationally and reasonably about this thing that most of us are terrified about. Meditations is great for understanding how we should be courageous in the face of very scary things like death, and yes, it's honest, but it's also necessary if we want to grow as people to confront those kinds of issues."
